Building a new home is the one time you can put every outlet, switch and light exactly where you want it. Once the drywall goes up, changes get harder and cost more. A little planning during the electrical walkthrough pays off for years.
Walk through your day
Picture how you will use each room. Where will the couch, TV, beds and desks go? Where will you charge phones? Where will you want a light switch when you walk in the door? Plan outlets and switches around real life, not just the floor plan.
Kitchen and laundry
- Plenty of countertop outlets, including on islands.
- Dedicated circuits for major appliances like the refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher and disposal.
- The right power for your range and dryer, whether electric or gas.
Lighting
- Recessed lighting for general light, plus task lighting under cabinets and over work areas.
- Three-way switches at both ends of halls and stairs.
- Dimmers in living and dining areas.
- Exterior lighting at entries, garages and patios.
Outdoor and garage
- Weather-resistant GFCI outlets on the porch, patio and near outdoor living areas.
- Garage outlets for tools, freezers and a future workshop.
- Thinking about an electric vehicle someday? Ask about planning for a charger now.
Plan for the future
Choose a panel with room to grow, and think about where a generator connection, a pool, an outdoor kitchen or a shop might go later. It is much easier to plan for it now.
