Electrical problems rarely appear out of nowhere. Most of the time, your home gives you a warning first. Knowing what to look for helps you fix small problems before they become dangerous or expensive ones.
1. Breakers that trip again and again
A breaker trips to protect your wiring from too much current. If the same breaker trips often, the circuit may be overloaded or there may be a fault somewhere on it. Do not keep resetting it. Unplug what is on that circuit and have it checked.
2. Lights that flicker or dim
A flickering bulb can be as simple as a loose bulb. But if lights dim when the air conditioner or another appliance kicks on, or if several lights flicker, it can point to a loose connection or a circuit that is carrying too much.
3. Outlets or switch plates that feel warm
Outlets and switches should not feel warm to the touch. Heat, discoloration or scorch marks can mean a loose or failing connection. Stop using that outlet and call an electrician.
4. Buzzing, crackling or a burning smell
Your electrical system should be quiet. Buzzing or crackling from an outlet, switch or the panel, or a burning smell with no obvious source, should be checked right away. If you see smoke or fire, get out and call 911.
5. Not enough outlets
If your home runs on extension cords and power strips, it was not wired for the way you live now. Adding outlets and circuits is safer than stretching what you have.
6. Outlets that do not hold a plug
Worn outlets that let plugs fall out can cause poor connections and heat. Replacing them is a quick fix, and it is a good time to add GFCI protection where it belongs, like kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoor outlets.
7. An older home with its original panel or wiring
Homes built decades ago were not designed for today’s appliances, electronics and air conditioning. If your home still has its original panel, an inspection can tell you whether it is time to upgrade.
